We are all about people, places and things in the lowcountry & “fun things to do for kids”. We provide a “Cover the Assignment” format! Each student may wish to become a “reporter”.

We publish via a website, in print and use social media! (We have a Social Media training!)

2018-2019 – we are offering a variety of choices, for fun and serious topics contributing to all to learn from and enjoy!.

Backpack Journalist program participants this coming school year will be going on adventures focused on gathering the Stories of Community Courage during the Civil Rights Era.  We will be visiting Charleston County Schools named after an individual, traveling throughout the lowcountry and up I26 to Columbia to visit USC Columbia, the  SC State Library, the  SC State Museum and the SC Military Museum. We will be bringing in documentary photographers and guest speakers to us in the classroom.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  we continue to support local festivals and parades, have picnics, go to the RiverDogs’ Game and visit the Charleston County Public Library.  Lots of fun ahead, and team building to come that continues to include the Charleston Front Porch – the Joe Riley Waterfront Park.  We recently visited the High Battery where we listened to a story about Robert Smalls, after connecting with our smart phone QR code!

Outcome:  short movies, a theatrical presentation in Spring 2019 at Piccolo/Spoleto and a “traveling show” as well (more on that soon).  A book is planned also with all students contributing and receiving bylines for their work.  Adding to their own personal portfolios.

We offer afterschool enrichment at various locations in Charleston.  Saturday School sessions, require parental permission to travel and participate in the field trips and experiences.

Afterschool Enrichment Course:  Covering the Assignment 9 weeks or 18 weeks

Writing stories and making short movies along the way! COVERING THE ASSIGNMENT with visits to the classroom from NASA/and their program at the College of Charleston. In the classroom: we bring in examples of documentary photography and have an open invitation to visit the Collections at the College of Charleston.  Guest speakers includes Social Media expert from Trident. SC Ports Authority will be the field trip. We also learn from area non profits:  CATR/Bridgehouse (therapeutic RIDING support) and the L.E.A.R.N. Horse Rescue.

Photography/Storytelling with Digital Cameras & iPads -9 week or 18 weeks

It’s the six word story, in photos and video, combined with creative portraits, to finished art. Hands on, each 9 weeks, students complete a portfolio of digital photos, stories and one art piece using a photograph.  Students should have available a digital storage devise (thumb drive – 16 gig) to save all photos and videos. We provide the supplies for the final multimedia piece.

Saturday School

We meet each Saturday beginning in September from 10 am  to 1 – 3 PM – depending on projects/ or field trip experiences.  Saturday School adventures are open to any student who has attended either our camps or afterschool.  For an example of the first reading that our “backpackers” performed, visit our facebook.com/backpackjournalist for a short film of the reading during PICCOLO. (May 30)

Cars & Parts & Ports

The Car is a moving science project and we study all the elements of design from the engine, to the paint and the grid in the tires.  It’s a 12 week course, with experts coming in, called:   “Motor Heads”.  We have a plastic engine making it easy to see all the moving parts, and then we have the actual parts.  We study the culture of the car, and how it affects our world that we live in, from the music to the car clubs ad collectors. This is STEAM.  We  bring in a RACE car, and have interns who have actually built cars from the bottom up.
