Writing, storytelling and photography camp. (Scholastic Journalism)

A Homeland adventure, while learning how to become a story teller and shoot digital photography.  Become a reporter on site at Patriot’s Point, home to the USS Yorktown and then spend a day at the Low Country Harley Davidson, all located in Charleston, South Carolina.   What’s a Harley got to do with it? STEM that is! Learn how the weather is “predicted” at NOAA  and how it can affect our homeland security!

The adventure begins on board of the USS Yorktown, with all students attending The Flight Academy which has been designed to serve middle and high school students with science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines to ignite a passion for careers in math and science. Being a US Navy sailor on the open ocean is a unique opportunity that very few people have the chance to experience so the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum is on a mission to provide students and visitors with the closest experience possible. Through engaging, interactive technology, the Flight Academy has been developed onboard the USS Yorktown that does just that.

The Flight Academy is based on the principles of flight and encompasses a comprehensive suite of immersive, aviation-inspired learning that taps into students’ modern sense of adventure and passion for technology. Students will demonstrate critical thinking, leadership, and team work as they play out real world situations. STEM disciplines are the crux of the program and designed to excite students about careers in math and science. Student squadrons will work together to rotate through the Joint Intelligence Center, Joint Operations Center, Flight Stations (simulators) and UAV Deck areas on real world missions; keeping their minds engaged and challenged.

Day trips include spending a day at the Low Country Harley Davidson Dealer, and learning how STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) all are required for participation with motorcycles and other vehicles.  Stations are set up that allow each student to learn about the elements that go into the manufacturing, sales and marketing of “bikes”.  NO students, will not ride a “Harley” but will also learn about the overall business mission and community support that Harley Davidson is known for, as they support our Homeland.

This workshop is open to students registered with the Little Bull Dog Camps at Burke Middle and High School.
