April – Month of the Military Child!

ATLANTA, GEORGIA

February 26, 2014

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  April is the month to honor military children.  A Backpack Journalist has been chosen to receive Scholastic Journalism Scholarships that will allow the company to offer free workshops for military youth.  There is also a creative writing contest to be announced soon.  A national branding campaign is set to launch at retail, and also the use of social media is planned.  A team of “backpackers” will also be visiting select military installations.

The Scholarships will be applied to the “What’s your story”  one-day “Backpack” workshop.  In one-day, “Backpack” combines a 10-question interview, then a trip to the portrait studio where an assortment of hats are available for all participants to enjoy and to have their portrait taken in.  Each youth then takes turns taking photos of each other.  Youth are encouraged to “shoot” for the moment and to express themselves.  The photo session is not the typical “portrait” session, but one based on “creative expression”.

Each youth receives a color print of their portrait, and included in an event/yearbook in print and “E” format. This workshop was held at the FFA National Conference in 2013, with exceptional outcomes for over 150 youth from across the United States, and continues as a Yellow Ribbon Event activity to support the National Guard Youth Workshops and Symposiums.
