 Spring Break – “Become a Backpack Reporter!”  Workshop (3 days)

Focus:  Writing & Digital Photography, Storytelling: Scholastic Journalism

Location: Patriot’s Point, Mt. Pleasant, SC.

Dates: Friday April 18, 2014 -Saturday, April 19, 2014 (Writing & Digital Photography – Storytelling)

Sunday, April 27, 2014 – Meet at Patriot’s Point, and then travel to Memorial Waterfront Park to Cover the Assignment, as a Backpack Reporter:

 

Workshop Description:  A Backpack Journalist’s module – What’s your story?

  • Included are writing basics and interviewing.
  • Digital photography working from a backpack creating portraits and environmental pictures.
  • There will be a guest speaker to address their first reporting assignment.

First two days of workshop are spent in a hands-on workshop, lab and with an assignment to return on Sunday, April 27, 2014 to cover their first assignment as a Backpack Reporter:    “The Blessing of the Fleet”

Outcome:  A portfolio book that tells the story of the SC Seafood Industry and the Blessing of the Fleet.  This book will contain the original works of the students, as before class ends on Saturday, April 19, each youth will participate in a brain storming session and select an assignment for their contribution to the overall content and design of the finished portfolio book. Contribution may include photographs, short videos and written articles and interviews.   Example:  health benefits of seafood in the diet, the economics of the SC Seafood Industry, SC Fisherman interviews or the history of the Blessing of Fleet.

Each attendee receives a full color 9” x 12” color portfolio book, with “E” book for their own portfolio.

$150 cost per student (includes a 9” x 12” portfolio book and e book, t-shirt, backpack and all writing pads, supplies, and lunch on April 27, 2014.

IMPORTANT:  Students are to bring a bag lunch for April 18-19, 2014.  Drinks and snacks provided.

Middle to High School, special allowance for 5th-6th grade students with recommendation from teacher.

Requirement:  Student has an interest in citizen’s journalism, writing or digital photography or film making.  Perhaps is curious, and enjoys meeting new people. Maybe is considered a techie, but not so much a writer?

All students are placed in teams following arrival and for the two-days in class.  As a Backpack Reporter on April 27, students work again in teams and report back to the meeting spot/classroom for a final review and turn in their completed digital photos and articles at deadline (5 PM, April 27, 2014)   The Portfolio book is assembled and then printed within 2-3 weeks.
